Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is a landmark document in the history of human rights. It was drafted by representatives from different legal and cultural backgrounds from various regions of the world and adopted by Resolution 217A (III) at the General Assembly held in Paris on December 10, 1948. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as a common achievement of all countries and peoples, for the first time stipulates that basic human rights should be universally protected. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has been translated into over 500 languages. It is widely believed that the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has inspired and facilitated the signing of over seventy human rights treaties. These treaties have become the enduring foundation of human rights law at both the global and regional levels (all referenced in the preamble to the Declaration).
